How much storage does HD video use?
Exact storage depends on your video, but as a rough estimate of 720p HD video on the Nimbus platform, 1GB (gigabyte) of storage is approximately 10 minutes of video content.
Why does Nimbus use Silverlight? Why not Flash?
Performance, reliability, and long term feature plans. Video and media delivery
was an afterthought for Flash, and while it has come a long way, Silverlight was
built for it. The differences are trivial when it comes to low-quality video,
but Silverlight is the clear winner for high-definition content in repeated
performance and reliability tests, and is continually the technology of choice
where that matters (just ask Netflix or NBC).
Can I edit my video within Nimbus?
Full support for Rough Cut Editor will be released within the next few
weeks.
How long does encoding take?
Encoding time is largely dependent upon your video content, and while we're
pretty fast, is still an extremely CPU-intensive process. Nimbus uses encoding
servers 18 to 24 processor cores, and can typically encode HD content at
4x-6x slower than real-time, plus some time for network transfer to the CDN. So,
a 3-minute video will normally take 12 to 18 minutes for encoding, while a 3
hour video might take between 12 to 18 hours.
Why does encoding seem to take longer than traditional
streaming platforms?
We use some of the latest server hardware available, but while most video
editing programs and our traditional streaming competitors encode video at one
constant bitrate, Nimbus encodes your video up to 8 times, for 8 different
bitrates.
Does Nimbus support video delivery to mobile devices?
Yes, we now support Silverlight and iOS, with more desktop and mobile
platforms on the way.
Does Nimbus support live Smooth Streaming (such as a live event)?
Yep, with full CDN support. You may need to work with our team to get it set up if you have hardware encoders.
If you just want to try it out with a software encoder, check out
this intro guide
for setting up a live stream with Expression Encoder v4.
